Description

Excellent properties of Hortis Growing Medium are:

  • Light weight, fast and easy working.
  • Sterile, no preventive disinfection necessary.
  • The pH is in the ideal range of 5.5-6.5 with a total soluble salt content less than 1.4 mS/cm.
  • Aeration after-saturation drainage of 45% with 55% residual water content.
  • A small amount of 1:1:1 analysis fertilizer to act as a starter feed plus a special additive for cation exchange capacity.
  • Always constant in quality of the original material.

Special advantages:

  • The wedge shape directs root growth downward.
  • The open bottom of each cavity permits air pruning of roots to take place.
  • Each plant is contained within the cell so no root tangling and so it is easier to examine for root development, removal, grading and transplanting.
    Medium preparation

The unique cellular configuration of the media results in a high water holding capacity which requires the media thoroughly be watered in before cuttings are stuck. This can be accomplished by using a drench nozzle or an overnight mist. To be certain the media is wet through, cut open a wedge/cupe and make sure there are no dry spots inside.

    Sticking

Growing Medium is ready for sticking. Since depth of sticking is essential, cuttings should be stuck at least 1/3 of cube depth and no more than 3/4. After sticking, follow your regular misting/watering cycles for your particular crop. And remember - always keep the cubes moist.

    Misting during propagation cycle

Misting cycles will vary according to crop and environment. Product must be kept moist throughout rooting process. As the cuttings root, the mist cycle should be reduced to harden the plants.

    Transplanting

Cuttings are ready for transplanting when roots are showing on outside of the Growing Medium. Make sure the cube is well saturated before potting with a nutrient solution (0,1% of a 20:10:20 fertilizer). Do not remove the foam medium.

Make sure the top of the rooted cube is just below the soil level. Water in thoroughly with the same nutrient solution and make sure the foam is kept moist until the roots are established in the soil mix. Maintain a regular watering cycle the first 3-5 days in order to ensure the roots properly are established in the soil.

It is important to minimize the effect of environmental stress on the plants. After they are established in the new growing medium, maintain the irrigation and fertilization programme recommended for the crop.
